Why choose a psychoanalyst? A psychoanalyst has the most rigorous and extensive training of all practitioners in the mental health field and are uniquely trained to understand the unconscious forces that influence our feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Only graduates of accredited psychoanalytic training institutes can ethically present themselves to the public as psychoanalysts. Applicants for psychoanalytic training have already completed graduate training as a psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker, or other mental health field. Analysts-in-training then receive, on average, about eight additional years of psychoanalytic specialization beyond the training they have already received in their graduate programs. The training includes extensive coursework and in-depth supervision by experienced analysts. Analysts-in-training are also required to be in therapy throughout their training to help them recognize and confront their own emotional issues which might interfere with providing the best possible treatment for their patients.
Dr. Winborn initially trained as a clinical psychologist and then completed training as a Jungian psychoanalyst through the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts. Currently, Dr. Winborn is the only certified psychoanalyst practicing in the Memphis area.
